Independence Day, Sorta

This month is, so far, one of independence-inducing events for some of the people I know….

  • My 28-year-old half-brother is finally moving out of my dad’s house.
  • His 26-year-old friend, and son of my best friend (strange coincidence, that), finally got his driver’s license.
  • J-Man helped his sister with her homework today, voluntarily, and without coaxing.
  • Nearly 16-year-old Notorious B.E.N. got two promotions at his first job—from trash collector to the pretzel machine and now, he’s da’ man and working the grill.

A little different than me and most of my generation:

  • I left home at 17 to begin my own life’s adventure, never to return
  • I got my license the week of my 16th birthday, never to ride the bike again for anything necessary
  • I never had any homework
  • I started working at age 11
I was reminded at my bootcamp this week that people entering the workforce today have different experiences and expectations and my generation may have to make some adjustments as to what is considered the ideal in work ethic and expectation.  Right, that’s going to happen.
