Kate Clinton was hilarious. I had been at the Suzanne Westenhoefer show about three months ago (also a comedian). I expected basically the same crowd to be in attendance. What was striking was that the crowd was about 15-20 years older on average and much more affluent. The show was sponsored by NCLR. Kate seemed to have to work pretty hard during this particular show as her Catholic-zinging and Bush-bashing wasn’t going over quite as well as it would have in say, San Francisco. I was in stitches through the entire show and seemed to be the only one in the audience who deeply “got” her schtick about her love of NPR’s correspondent Sylvia Poggolia. I thought perhaps, I should have worn some Depends during that particular segment. Anyway, next year will be NCLR’s 30th anniversary. Clinton has been a front line supporter for the past 25 years. Right on!
Then, I was off to Modesto. I had it in my mind that it was like hours and hours away the way my friend Lisa had always carried on about her drive to Sacramento from there in the past. Not that she made the trip often. I think she visited me once in five years. It was too long a trip in her mind. What she was forgetting was she was driving from Santa Cruz to Modesto and then to Sacramento, so, yes, the trip was 3 ½ hours! I showed up right on time to find that Lisa hadn’t actually reserved at truck. She had visions of endless numbers of available trucks and thought for sure this would not be a problem. Well, she is blonde. We did find a small truck, without a ramp after some time. Once we got started, It was pretty easy. But, it seemed the key was for me to pack the truck. Lisa seemed to have no idea about spatial planning. I guess that also attests to my rootlessness as I am so darned good at packing the moving truck. What had taken her 2 trips in a 17 foot truck took us 1 ½ in 10 foot truck. And, we managed to unpack the entire contents into a very small one car garage.
Her place is very cute and near the college in town. Once it’s actually done, it will be a keeper. However, that would mean the landlord would actually have to finish the work that’s been promised since the middle of March. Tonight, we head out for Mom’s house and sushi.
